One of the reasons why dogs bark is because they are bored. When they grew up in an environment that gave them lots of attention, they usually have difficulty dealing with the situation when they are alone. Barking for some dogs means they want your attention because they felt ignored and neglected. Usually, dog owners brought this to themselves by spoiling their dogs. Teaching your dog to stop barking can be quite a challenge. You have to stay calm and firm without being rigid about his training.

Don’t Give In

The first step in training your dog not to bark is for you not to give in easily. Teach him that he won’t and will never get your attention by barking. If he becomes bored on the yard, it is inevitable that he will bark. However, when he starts to bark and you let him in, this gives him inkling that his barking works and will use this method every time you leave him outdoors.

Don’t Yell

Yelling will not work on dogs. This gives them the idea that your yelling is better than being ignored completely. If the idea of you yelling at him ease up his boredom a little, he will get do everything he can to get you to do it again through barking. No matter how it irks you that he is barking, you can ignore him and show him that you are doing something more important that tending his boredom.

Improve Your Communication

Talking to a dog is not like talking to human beings. Your words won’t mean anything to him. Instead how you say the words and how your body acts is the only means that they can understand what you are saying. Dogs can’t communicate back so he uses his bark. However, it can become a nuisance if he starts barking for no apparent reason. So, you must tell him firmly and let your actions show sheer disapproval whenever he does this.

Distraction

Another way to make your dog stop barking is to distract him when he starts to bark. One technique is to make a mysterious unidentifiable sound that he has not heard before. Repeat it until you are certain that he has forgotten about barking for a while. Remember how dogs jerk their ears when they hear something? Take advantage of that.

Give Him Something to Do

Avoid boring him by giving him something to do. Give him chew toys and some dog treats in order for him to forget barking. Pack canned food and place it on his pen so it will take a while for him to get the food out. Keep your dogs busy while left alone so that they will not feel neglected and ignored. In turn, they will not get bored and catch your attention by barking.

In conclusion, training the dog to stop barking is essentially the same for each dog. However, when you notice that his barking is not usual and he bares his teeth, you would want to consult your veterinarian about this. Do not by all means threaten him. Don’t even think about squirting water on his face or nose. When dogs feel threatened, their animal instincts take over making them hard to control and train.
