Training your dog early makes better results. If you want him to stop biting, the best time would be when he is still young. However, there are just some dogs that continue to bite despite his early training. This is quite difficult to manage but is not impossible. Dog training is still possible for older dogs. You will base this training on the causes of his biting activity. All you have to do is to know why he is having such behavior.

Out Of Pain Biting

You may want to consider putting a muzzle on him to avoid any dangerous and frightening attack to your family members and guests. Let him know right away that you are not at all pleased with what he is doing. You don’t tolerate such behavior, not on your watch and let him know that. Immediately do this so that he will know the reasons why you are correcting his behavior. If you wait out for too long, he will falsely think that you are tolerating what he does and that he can do it despite your disapproval. Be firm at him but never punish him physically.

Showing off Dominance

Be consistent when you are dog training. This way you are letting him know that he cannot dominate you and that you are above his rank. Make sure that you command him to sit and stay properly before giving him his favorite food. His food should not be on his free access. Feed him with a preset time and remove his bowl when the time is up. This method will put you in command always. Do not tolerate his rowdy behavior when eating as well. Make him patiently sit and wait for his food. Do not let him into your room to sleep. He needs to know where the boundaries are so that he will eventually know that household items like furniture are off-limits.

Excitement Biting

Contact games with your dog should be avoided. Wrestling and tug of war are two common games that you should avoid. When you play retrieve, make him sit and drop the retrieved item before he can get your treat. This will make him enjoy what he is doing and will not make him get bored. This will also avoid biting situation because you are making him calm. Whenever he does things right during an exercise, give him praises. Set an amount of time for his exercise so that you will avoid further stimulation. Further stimulation will risk aggressive behavior. Limit his time of play.

Territory

Let him know where his area of responsibility is namely – his pen or kennel, beyond this is no longer his territory. Do not tolerate his territorial behavior when he turns this to a piece of furniture. Remove the item so that there will be no temptation on his side.

Biting for Fear

Dogs can sense danger and fear whenever they are put into a new and unsettling situation. You can increase his self-confidence by exposing him to new circumstances coupled with lots of positive reinforcements like treats and praises. If you don’t get too many visitors, take your dog for a walk and introduce him to your friends or acquaintance so that he won’t fear being around people.

The bottom line in dog training is patience. You will eventually build his confidence and behavior according to your liking. Constant routine is the key. Your dog will never learn if you change the training every now and then.
