Dog Jumping Up

It is an area of concern for dog owners when dogs start jumping. If your dog starts jumping at you, it can really be a frightening situation. It is much more frightening if your dog jumps at your kids and every visitor you might have. You would want it to stop once and for all if not control the situation well.

Luckily, putting an end to your dog jumping is not that quite difficult. What you only need to invest is a little time and effort to provide him regular training that is consistent and routine. Anyone can train their dogs to have proper behavior in order to avoid compromising situations.

Attention

Give him attention at least 15 minutes after your arrival at home. This is the same when introducing him to your guests. Let him know that you are the leader of your pack so that he knows where to place himself in the rank. Don’t tolerate his behavior of jumping around whenever you arrive home by sprinkling a little water on his nose or making a noise with a can full of pebbles. Do this on a regular basis so that he will no longer make a big deal upon your arrival.

Greetings

When you greet your dog, make sure that you stoop down so that you are at his eye level. This way he will learn from you that he doesn’t need to jump in order to be able to greet you. Training your dog not to jump is showing him simply the things you would want him to know. Always do the cuddling at his level.

Play

Do away with most rough games for your dog. Avoid games like tug of war, wrestling, etc. These type of games not only encourage your dog to jump but will make them think that it is perfectly alright for him to repeat the behavior anywhere and anytime. Rough games also promote aggression on your dog’s part thus making things more complicated and a whole lot worse because you will be dealing with yet another problem.

Commands

Remember that you are the alpha leader, which means that your command must be carried through otherwise he will face the consequences. The most important command that your dog must learn is “sit.” If you sense that your dog is about to jump, command him to sit so that he can resist the urge to jump. Every dog trainer use “sit” as a command to keep their dogs from getting rowdy. Train him to follow commands until he will learn how to respond well. This is the basic foundation of dog training.

Praise Him

Whenever he follows your command, immediately praise him. Pet him even more if he doesn’t jump at you or at anything. This will give him positive reinforcement that you like what he does, doing this will encourage him to do as you please again because dogs tend to like to gain approval in what they do.

During your dog training, make sure your family understands the rule very well. The same is true with all your guests. This will make the entire household and guests above your dog’s rank at all times. In time, he will be able to accept that everyone is above him and that he needs to learn how to do things right if he wishes to please you.

Good advice, I agree with giving praise to your pet when they do as you ask. Using positive reinforcement is a surefire way to get your pet to stop jumping.

When training a dog not to jump, I like to teach him that good things come from the floor. So if the dog is about to jump up, I throw treats on the floor to distract him. I also teach him a 'touch' or 'shake' command. It doesn't take long before the dog learns that this is the proper way to greet family and guests. :)
